Wadebridge exists because of its bridge, and the town is still organised around getting across the river. It is the natural centre for north Cornwall and the base for much of the trade that serves Padstow, Rock and the coast.

The bridge and the bypass
The A39 bypasses the town, which keeps the worst of the through traffic out and makes the trading estates on the edge easy to reach.
The old bridge and the streets around it are another matter — medieval, narrow, and not somewhere to take a loaded lorry without knowing exactly where you are going.
Down towards Rock and Polzeath the lanes narrow considerably and get very busy in season, and the estuary side has soft ground in places that does not advertise itself.
