Hiab hire and haulage in Kingsbridge

Kingsbridge sits at the head of its estuary in the middle of the South Hams, which is beautiful country and difficult country in roughly equal measure. The A381 is the road in and it is a modest one, and everything off it narrows quickly the closer you get to the water.

It serves Salcombe and the villages around the estuary, most of which are harder to reach again.

Access

Lanes all the way, and a steep town

The A381 is fine. Everything beyond it is lanes, and they are properly narrow with high banks and few passing places. We plan the route rather than trusting a satnav, which will cheerfully send a lorry somewhere it cannot get out of.

Fore Street climbs steeply from the quay and the town is busy in season with nowhere convenient to stand.

Salcombe beyond is tighter still — steep, narrow, and packed solid in summer. Work there is early work and some addresses are simply not reachable.

The work

Marine, property and estuary work

Boats, cradles and marine equipment are steady work around the estuary, particularly at the start and end of the season.

The property work here is substantial, much of it on second homes and conversions where the plot is down a lane and the only access is over a wall or a hedge.

  • Boats, cradles and marine equipment around the estuary
  • Garden rooms, hot tubs and studios lifted into place
  • Steel and materials into conversion and renovation sites
  • Containers onto farms and plots in the South Hams
  • Early slots for work in Salcombe and the estuary villages

The lorry

What turns up in Kingsbridge

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Kingsbridge

Can you get down the lanes to the estuary villages?
Often, but it genuinely depends on which village and which lane. This is the part of Devon where we most want to check the route in advance, because some of those lanes have no way out for a loaded lorry.
Do you work in Salcombe?
Yes, early in the day and out of season where possible. Some addresses there are only reachable by lifting from a distance, and a few are not reachable at all — we will tell you which.

We also cover

Some of these are over the county line, which makes no difference to us: we work both sides of the Tamar and there is no surcharge for crossing it. Each is labelled with the county it is actually in.
