Hiab hire and haulage in Saltash

Saltash is the Cornish end of the Tamar crossing, which makes it the single most useful town on our patch for cross-border work. A great many of our customers operate on both sides of the river, and Saltash is where the two halves of the job meet.

Brunel's railway bridge and the road bridge beside it are the reason the town exists in its modern form, and everything about the local geography follows from them.

Access

The bridge, and the fact that it is the only way

The Tamar Bridge is the crossing, and when it is disrupted there is no convenient alternative short of a long detour upriver or the Torpoint ferry. That is worth building into any tight schedule.

The Carkeel area at the top of the town, where the A38 comes through, is the commercial end and has good access.

Waterside, down by the old ferry slip, is the opposite: steep, narrow, and with the river at the bottom of it. Lifts down there need planning rather than improvisation.

The work

Cross-border work, trade and construction

The bulk of what we do here is for businesses working both sides of the Tamar: plant hire firms, builders, fabricators. We do not charge extra for crossing the bridge, which removes a slightly artificial line from the pricing.

Saltash itself has had a lot of housing development, and that brings the usual steel, timber and materials work.

  • Cross-border moves between Cornwall and Plymouth
  • Plant delivered and collected around Carkeel
  • Steel and materials into housing development sites
  • Containers onto plots, yards and farms
  • Combined runs taking in Plymouth the same day

The lorry

What turns up in Saltash

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Saltash

Do you charge extra to cross the Tamar?
No. The price is the job, the distance and the time on site. Crossing the bridge is not a separate line on the invoice.
Can you do a Saltash and Plymouth job the same day?
Frequently, and it is usually the cheapest way to do both. Tell us about the second job when you book the first.

We also cover

Some of these are over the county line, which makes no difference to us: we work both sides of the Tamar and there is no surcharge for crossing it. Each is labelled with the county it is actually in.
