Hiab hire and haulage in Torpoint

Torpoint is a few hundred metres from Plymouth across the water and about twenty miles from it by road. That gap is the defining fact about working here.

The chain ferry crosses it, and it takes vehicles far heavier than ours, so capacity is never the question. The queue is. It is not something to build a tight schedule around without checking first.

Access

Ferry or bridge — we decide per job

The Torpoint Ferry is usually the sensible route from Plymouth and we use it. Our lorry is comfortably within what it carries, but the queue at peak times is real, so where a job is time-critical we will often go round via the Tamar Bridge and Saltash instead, even though it is much further.

Either way, it is worth telling us if your job has a fixed slot, because the routing decision is ours to get right.

Beyond Torpoint the Rame peninsula narrows quickly. Kingsand, Cawsand and the lanes down to them are tight, steep, and a long way from anywhere.

The work

Peninsula work, naval and domestic

The peninsula is a mix of naval establishment, farmland and a lot of properties in villages with no real vehicle access, which is standard hiab territory.

Because everything here is awkward to reach, deliveries frequently get left at the nearest convenient point by other hauliers, and we get the call to finish the job.

  • Deliveries across the Rame peninsula
  • Lifts into village properties at Kingsand and Cawsand
  • Containers onto farms and yards
  • Plant and equipment where the ferry is the sensible route
  • Completing deliveries that have been left at the roadside

The lorry

What turns up in Torpoint

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Torpoint

Do you use the Torpoint Ferry?
When it suits the job. Weight is not the issue, as the ferry carries far heavier vehicles than ours. For a time-critical delivery we will often go round by the Tamar Bridge instead, because a queue at the slipway is not something we can control.
Can you reach Kingsand and Cawsand?
Parts of them. Those villages are steep and very tight, so it depends on the address, and we would want to see a photograph before agreeing a date.

We also cover

Some of these are over the county line, which makes no difference to us: we work both sides of the Tamar and there is no surcharge for crossing it. Each is labelled with the county it is actually in.
