Hiab hire and haulage in Bideford

Bideford is a working port town on the Torridge, and it still handles commercial shipping as well as the traffic out to Lundy. The quay is the centre of the town in a way that is unusual now.

The defining feature for anyone driving something heavy is the bridge situation: there are two, and only one of them is any use to us.

Access

Two bridges, and only one for lorries

The old Long Bridge across the Torridge is medieval, narrow and weight-restricted, and it is not a crossing for a loaded lorry. The modern Torridge Bridge carrying the A39 is, and that is the route we take.

Knowing which bridge a route uses matters here more than in most towns, and a satnav will not always get it right.

The quayside has decent access but the usual caution about quay edges and made ground applies. Caddsdown and the business parks on the edge of town are straightforward.

The work

Port, trade and north Devon property

Quayside and marine work comes up regularly, as does trade movement around the business parks.

Beyond the town, north Devon has a great deal of rural property and conversion work, with the access problems that go with it.

  • Quayside and port-related lifts
  • Deliveries around Caddsdown and the business parks
  • Steel and materials into rural conversion work
  • Containers onto farms, yards and plots
  • Plant moved across north Devon

The lorry

What turns up in Bideford

One vehicle: a 30TM HMF hiab with 10 metres of reach on a cheesewedge body, carrying up to 10 tons. It brings the load and lifts it into place, so there is no second machine to arrange and nobody waiting about at either end.

Questions

Common questions about Bideford

Do you use the old bridge?
No. The Long Bridge is weight-restricted and not suitable for a loaded lorry, so we route over the A39 Torridge Bridge. Worth knowing if you are giving directions.
Can you work on the quay?
Yes, with the usual check on where the outriggers go. Quay edges and made ground need asking about rather than assuming.

Some of these are over the county line, which makes no difference to us: we work both sides of the Tamar and there is no surcharge for crossing it. Each is labelled with the county it is actually in.
